Mercaptopurine is used in combination with other medications as a maintenance treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It belongs to a group of medicines known as antimetabolites.

Mercaptopurine intermeddles with the growth of cancer cells, which are ultimately destroyed. Since the growth of normal cells might also be affected by this medicine, other unwanted effects will also happen. Some of these might be severe and must be reported to your doctor.
