Botulinum toxin
The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, sometimes referred to as “Botox” by patients, is a popular injectable that temporarily decreases or eliminates facial fine lines and wrinkles. The most frequently treated areas are frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet nearby the eyes.
Several other areas have been treated like thick bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, lip lines and gummy smiles.
Botulinum toxin is a purified substance that is based on bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin obstruct the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was administered. If there is no signal, the muscle is unable to contract. The final result is a decrease in unwanted facial wrinkles or appearance.
